YANGON

INTRODUCTION

Yangon is the capital of Myanmar. In 1755, King along Playa founded it on the site of a small village call Dagon which he occupied. Yangon means "End of Strife". Before 1988, Yangon was formally known as Rangoon.

LOCATION
It is situated in the south of Myanmar. Surrounded on three sides by water: Pounding Creek, Haling River and Bag River. Yangon covers over 350 sq km and has a population of over 5 million.

PLACES OF INTEREST
Shwedagon Pagoda, King Okkalapa and two merchants, Taphussa and Bhillika, built the Shwedagon Pagoda, the landmark of Yangon. It is over 2,000 years old and over 100m high.

Sule Pagoda, located at crossroads of Sule Pagoda Road and Maha Bandoola Road, 43.6m high.

National Museum, five floors o exhibits, the Lion's Throne, displays the Elephant throne, the Royal Reagalia, rare manuscripts, paintings etc.

Myanmar Gems Museum and Gems Mart. It displays exotic gems in the raw, jade, jewelleries, pearls and minerals found in Myanmar.

Bogyoke Aung San market is a popular shopping centre for Myanmar souvenirs; gems and jewellery; arts & crafts; silk & cotton fabrics and garments.

MAWLAMYAING

INTRODUCTON
Mawlamyaing is a charming town and the capital of Mon state.

LOCATION
It is situated at the mouth of Thanlwin ( Salween ) River, about 300km from Yangon.

PALACE OF INTEREST
Kyaik Thanlan Pagoda, Uzena Pagoda, Kawguan Cave, Payon Cave, Kyaikhtiyo (Golden Rock) Pagoda, Kyaikkhami Pagoda, Setse Beach.

BAGAN

One of the most remarkable archaeological sites in Asia, if not the world, the magic of Bagan has inspired visitors to Myanmar for nearly 1000 years. Once the centre of a glorious kingdom, ancient temples dot the landscape a far as the eye can see. Today, apart form the spectacular sunset views and serene river cruises, Bagan is also known as the centre of Myanmar lacquer ware industry.

LOCATION
It is situated in the dry zone of central Myanmar and 688 km far from Yangon. It is 193 km from Mandalay by land. It lies on the banks of Ayeyarwaddy River. It is 62.4 km from Mt. Popa and can be visited ever during the rainy season.

PLACES OF INTEREST
Archaeological Museum, numerous temples such as Ananda Temple, Thatbyinnyu Temple, Dhamayangyi Temple, Shwezigone Pagoda, Sulamani Pagoda and Htilo Minlo Pagoda to name a few. A visit to the Lacquer ware industry and Ayeyarwaddy River view are places of interest.

POPA

It is an 1500 meter high extinct volcano. The mountain stands in a perpendicular rock formation with almost vertical sides. It is a legendary home of the nats or spirits. The Mt Popa area has also been designated as a National Park, one of the popular ecotourism destinations in Myanmar.

LOCATION
Mt Popa is located about 50 km southst of Bagan and 651 km north of Yangon.

MANDALAY

INTRODUCTION
King Mindon founded Mandalay on 23rd May 1859 AD. It is the capital of the Myanmar Kingdom, the second capital of Myanmar, both a bustling commercial centre and a cultural tourism site with the old monasteries, showcasing Myanmar arts and architecture of the 19th Century.

LOCATION
It is situated on the Eastern banks of the Ayeyarwaddy River, 668 km due north of Yangon.

PLACES OF INTEREST
Mandalay Hill, Maha Muni Pagoda.

AMARAPURA

INTRODUCTION
it is an ancient capital of Kongbaung Dynasty.

LOCATION
Amarapura is located about 11 km from south of Mandalay.

PLACES OF INTEREST
u Bein Bridge is the longest wooden bridge in Myanmar. Its length is 1209 meters and ceosses the Taung Thaman Inn.

MINGUN

INTRODUCTION
It is one of the hills associated with Sagaing Hill. Mingun is a famous religious aea.

LOCATION
It is located about 11 km upriver from Mandalay on the western bank of the Ayeyarwaddy River.

PLACES OF INTEREST
Mingun Bell is the largest ringing bell in the world. It weighs 90.52 ton(55,555 viss) and was donated by King Bodawpayar in the 19th Century.
Pahto Taw Gyi is an unfinishes pagoda in Mingun built by King Bodawpayar.
Statue of Mingun Sayadaw, Mingun Sayadaw U Viseitara Thara, recorded in Guiness Book of World Records for his expectional memory.

SAGAING

Sagaing is known as a meditation centre. Myanmar all over the country would visit Sagaing for the purpose of feligious retreat.

 

PYIN OO LWIN

It was formerly known as "Maymyo " after the English Colonel May and was used as a summer retreat for the British during the colonial era.

LOCATION
Pyin Oo Lwin is situated 69 km to the east of Mandalay; 1000m above sea level.

PLACES OF INTEREST
National Kandawgyi Park, Chinese Temple, Pwe Kauk Waterfalls, Goteik Viaduct and Peik Chin Myaung Cave.

TAUNGGYI

INTRODUCTION
Taunggyi is one of the popular resorts in the pine clad hills in Myanmar. It is also the centre for Shan culture.

LOCATION
731.0 km from yangon .Located 1433 m above sea-level.

PLACES OF INTEREST
Taunggyi Museum, situated at corner of Bogyoke Aung San Road and Eintawyar Road. It displays Shan culture, ancient Shan arts and over 30 tribal costumes of the Shan Plateau.
Nyaung Shwe Sawbwa ( 'duke' or 'lord') Museum, in Nyaung Shwe. Study the Shan dress, musical instruments, paintings, the Shan Sawbwa costumes and religious goods.

Inle Lake is a highland lake. Famous in this area are silversmiths, traditional looms and one-leg rowers of the "Inn-thas".
Weekly floating markets open every fifth day after making its round in the towns of Nyaung Shwe, Shwe Nyaung and Heho. During market day, Taunggyi is a sea of colors. Members of the various hill tribes dressed in their traditional costumes complete with their head dress come to town to sell their wares.

INLAY

INTRODUCTION
Inlay Lake is the jewel of the Shan State, famous for its unique one –leg rowers, floating villages and colorful market, Inlay silk woven by hand looms.

LOCATION
The enchanting lake on the Shan plateau is located about 30 km to the south of Taunggyi, sheltered by 1500m high mountains and covering 145 km. The lake itself is situated at 900m above sea level.

PLACES OF INTEREST
Paung Daw Oo Pagoda is situated in the Inlay Lake. The Pagoda festival, held once a year in October, is full of pageantry and ceremonial splendor.
Nga Phe Chaung Monastery ( famous jumping cat monastery). Out in the open lake is a monastery with 157 years' history. Supported by 654 teak pillars of which 200 are gilded in gold, it houses 6 golden Buddha statues of varying sizes.


PINDAYA

INTRODUCTION
Pindaya is a small picturesque town at the foot of Mene Mountain Range. It is famous for Pindaya Caves in which thousands of Buddha Images have been place or carved for many centuries.

LOCATION
Pindaya is located over 100 km from Taunggyi. It is noted for its extensive limestone caves and a beautiful lake. Pindaya and Aungban pass through Pa-Oh and Danu Villages.

PLACES OF INTEREST
Wide Spreading Banyan Trees, more than a thousand years old, line the way to the Pindaya Caves. The Pindaya Caves are set deep in the hill-sides and there stand at the entrance the 50 meter-high Shwe-U-Min Pagoda.

 

SITTWAY

INTRODUCTION
Sittway is the capital of Rakhine State.

LOCATION
It is situated in southwestern Myanmar on the a coastline along the Bay of Bengal.

PLACES OF INTEREST
Point, a viewpoint of the sittway. Rakhine Cultural Museum located at Mawleik ward. It displays information on Rakhine traditional costumes, ancient Rakhine traditional costumes, ancient Rakhine cities, Rakhine literature and Rakhine arts. Kanthayar Beach Resort, with its long coastline, located about 16 miles north of the Gwa.

MRAUK U

INTRODUCTION
15th century ancient city of Rakhine Kingdom is known for its old temples with wall paintings of Indin Cultural influence.

LOCATION
It is situated north-east of Sittway.

PLACES OF INTEREST
Mahamuni Shrine is situated 30 km from Mrauk U.
Shittaung Pagoda, built by Rakhine King Min Ba Gyi ( AD- 897 )
Dukkanthein Pagoda, Waithali Ancient City, Mrauk U Palace.

 

DAWEI

Dawei is the capital of Tanintharyi Division in the south of Myanmar. It was founded in 1750 A.D. Dawei longyi (sarong) is famous among the Myanmar. The area produces rubber, dried fish and teakwood. There is also an ore refinery at Kamyawkin Smelting Plant nearby.

LOCATION
Situated about 614.3 km south of Yangon on the northern bank of the Dawei River.

PLACES OF INTEREST
Maungmagan Beach Resort, famous for its clear blue water and white sands. It is situated 4.8 km northwest of Dawei.

MYEIK

Myeik is a coastal town in the Southern part of Myanmar. Silk, pearl and fermented fish paste (ngapi) are products of the region.

LOCATION
About 862 km to the south of Yangon.

PLACES OF INTEREST
Birds; nests can be found in the caves on the islands of the Myeik archipelago. It is also known for its silk weaving.

KAWTHAUNG

LOCATION
Formerly called Victoria point, Kawthaung is a southernmost town in Myanmar. It is 921 km from Yangon and 622 km from Mawlamyine. From Ranong, a boeder town in Thailand, visitors can take 20 minute boat trips to Kawthaung for sightseeing & shopping.

PLACES OF INTEREST
Lanpi Marine Biological Park, Salone Village, Shwe Kyun ( Runel Island ), where there is a goldmine and is 48 km northwest of Kawthaung. Iron Island at Day Wuit Kyun is 72 km south of Kawthaung. Tungsten is found in this area. Andaman Club on the Thahtay Kyun Island is located west of Kawthaung.
